CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE, ALASKA
Monseigneur John A. Lunney was tasked with establishing a new parish in West Anchorage, which became the foundation for a thriving spiritual community. The original parish, now the Lunney Center, was built in 1976 and served as a cornerstone for local Catholics. Since then, the parish has grown into a vibrant, diverse community, welcoming families from various ethnic backgrounds and celebrating this diversity through events and programs that promote unity. In addition to spiritual growth, the parish emphasizes outreach and service, focusing on supporting those in need and promoting social justice—values instilled by Monseigneur Lunney. As we move forward, his legacy will continue to inspire us to nurture a community where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered in their faith.
In 2005, construction of the current church began, marking a key milestone in the community's spiritual journey. This project was made possible by the generous support of parishioners and donors who recognized the need for a new worship space for the growing congregation. After months of hard work, the church was inaugurated on December 12, 2005, celebrated with joy as a new chapter for the parish
Today, we proudly serve as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a beacon of faith and community in our region. Our mission is supported by the dedicated efforts of the Vincentian Fathers, whose commitment to service and spiritual guidance has been instrumental in fostering a welcoming environment for all.
Our parish is a tapestry of diversity, reflecting a rich blend of cultures, traditions, and backgrounds. This vibrant mosaic is not only a source of strength but also a celebration of the unique contributions each community brings to our shared faith journey. Throughout the year, we host a variety of multicultural events that highlight this diversity, allowing us to come together in fellowship, worship, and celebration.
As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain committed to nurturing this spirit of inclusivity and collaboration, ensuring that the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a place where everyone feels valued and at home. Together, we strive to build a vibrant community of faith that honors our past while looking forward to a hopeful and united future.
